Say Hello to Dencun
Long waited proto-danksharding just around the corner. on January 17, Ethereum devs implement the Dencun upgrade on the Goerli testnet.
What is the Dencun and why is it important? Dencun contains EIP-4844 aka proto-danksharding and it’s critical for Rollups. As you know, the majority of the costs for Rollup projects are made up of CALL DATA calls. Proto-danksharding introduces a new type of transaction specifically for Rollups. Named as 'Blob Carrier Transactions', this type of transaction is similar to a normal transaction except that it carries a data piece called a 'blob'. Blobs, which add data fields to blocks for data transportation, are stored in the consensus layer, not in the execution layer. Blob data is not executed by the EVM, but it can be viewed by it. The gas policy for Blob Carrier Transactions differs from that of regular transactions, resulting in significantly lower CALL DATA costs. This change substantially reduces the costs for Rollup protocols.
So, what is next? The next implementation steps include Dencun's activation on the Sepolia testnet on Jan. 31, followed by the Holesky testnet on Feb. 7. The final mainnet release is expected by the end of the first quarter Q1 2024.
PGN Shutting Down
Launched in July 2023, the Public Goods Network was established with the aim of generating revenue through sequencer fees and using this income to fund public goods projects.
At this point, considering usage, incentives, costs, and workload, it has been understood that the PGN network is not sustainable. The Gitcoin team is considering decommissioning the PGN network in June 2024.
It was clear from the beginning that this experimental project was not sustainable. Goodbye, PGN network!
Taiko Final Testnet
The mainnet launch of Taiko is just around the corner! The team has released the A6 (Katla) testnet, the final testnet before the mainnet goes live.
Katla is coming with Based Contestable Rollup (BCR) architecture. So, what is the BCR, and what’s behind it? A Based Contestable Rollup is a rollup that features contestation and employs based sequencing. Let’s examine it with an example.
Taiko’s Katla testnet prover architecture is heavily based on the TKO token. It will not surprise If Taiko launches a token with a mainnet launch. Good luck airdrop hunters!
Optimism RPGF3
Optimism Retro Public Goods Funding Round 3 officially ended. In this round, 654 projects attended the RPGF3, and 501 were eligible for funding. The badgeholders distributed their ballots for projects to determine how much allocation should they have. Here is the distribution graph of ballots below. Unfortunately, there was a quorum with 17 ballots for eligibility and L2 Planet got only 15.
The max ballots given to the Protocol Guild with 110 ballots, and the min ballot was given to 5 projects with 4 ballots. You can see the ballot for each category in the graph below.
RPGF is one of the biggest experiments about public goods funding in the crypto space. We will see more rounds in 2024 and curious how it will evolve in the future.
